Art After Dark returned to the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum (SLORRM) for 2018, with an opening event that welcomed the joint participation of some of the Railroad Historic District's finest dining venues. The theme of the February event was, "Come for the art, stay for the food!"
About 360 people attended!
Eager to amplify the success of its first Art After Dark (AAD) in June 2017, the SLORRM launched this new initiative to bring greater recognition to the entire Railroad Historic District. The Museum's location expands the range of SLO's traditional AAD galleries; the pairings with local restaurants will increase the offerings for art patrons to remain in the district for dinner. Participating are: Café Roma, Bon Temps Creole Café, Del Monte Café, Sally Loo's Wholesome Cafe, and My Thai Restaurant. This diverse selection of eateries - all of them merely steps away from the Museum - provided tantalizing appetizers and sampler platters for the Museum guests. Enticing! Coupled with the ample, free parking, it made for an easy evening of dinner and art!
The Museum hosted "Railroads and Art." Among the painters were Glen Matteson and Joan Sullivan. Rail photographers Rich Hansen, Annie Steele, Alan Upshaw, Albert Borden, and Cheryl Strahl had new works in various formats including an "old fashioned" 35mm photo slide show from David Weisman. Jamie Foster and Phil Loarie made use of large screen video projection for both photography and experimental video art - a feature not seen in many traditional galleries.
The SLO Railroad Museum has ample free parking! Patrons began their visit at the museum, taking in the railroad art, and enjoyed local eateries before strolling downtown to the other venues. Guests made the historic Railroad Square their first "station stop" of an evening to please the eye and the palate.
See the cleverly written New Times article about the event. Love the "choo-choo-choose" line!
